Acerola Cherry - TMF Florida Fruits - www.TMFflorida.com - Tropical Medical Fruits - www.TropicalMedicalFruits.com

Fruit Description

Acerola Cherry

Acerola Cherry (Barbados Cherry) has been used in Latin America and the Amazon as a health promoting and medicinal plant for hundreds of years and has recently become popular with westerners for some of its remarkable health properties. The Acerola cherry is juicy, often as much sour as sweet in flavor and very high in vitamin C and other nutrients ... it is one of the richest sources of vitamin C in fruit known to science.

The acerola cherry is renowned for its high concentration of vitamin C and anti-oxidant activity, among other benefits. It is incredible and unbelievable that one tiny cherry has a higher vitamin C content than an orange. Specifically, the vitamin C content can be as much as 65 times greater than an orange!!!

In Brazil, Acerola juice is as common as orange juice is in Europe. Until Camu Camu Berry emerged, Acerola was considered to be the richest source of vitamin C. However, although Camu Berry is championed by some as the #1 vitamin C fruit ... the Acerola Cherry can reach far higher Vitamin C values than the Camu Berry (2000mg) ... vs ... over 4500+ mg for the Acerola!

The highest recorded value of vitamin C (per 100g of Acerola Cherry) was over 5000+ units !!!

The vitamin content depends on where the acerola grows, ripeness, season and climate. The acerola tree grows fast and will yield year-round in tropical and sub-tropical climates. Whereas, the Camu Berry yields for a short few months only during the amazon rainy season. The riper the acerola fruit is, the less vitamin C it contains (although the ripening process will usually increase other antioxidant values in the fruit). Therefore it is usually harvested while it is still green.

The Acerola Cherry has no "unripe" stages ... it can be eaten as a small, immature fruit ... and as it "ripens" to its red stages.

"The tamarind fruit pulp has been official in the British and American pharmacopoeias and most other international pharmacopoeias for its medicinal properties.

Some 200,000 lbs (90,000 kg) of the shelled fruits have been annually imported into the United States for the medicinal drug trade."

Nutritional Information

Health Benefits - Acerola Cherry

Fresh acerola can contain as much as 3.5% ascorbic acid by weight, and a 180mL glass of fresh squeezed acerola juice can contain as much vitamin C as 14 liters of orange juice!

The acerola cherry also contains approximately double the magnesium, potassium and vitamin B5, as an orange. They are known to have high levels of vitamin A, often equal to that of raw carrots. In addition to vitamins A, B and C, acerola cherries also contain the key minerals calcium, iron, and phosphorus.

As well as these powerful essential vitamins and minerals, acerola cherries also contain other health promoting plant compounds such as flavonoids and anthocyanins that are part of a bigger category of health compounds called polyphenols. Acerola cherries even boasts a novel flavonoid so far only discovered in only these cherries, though that does not rule out the possibility that this compound could also be present but undiscovered in other fruits.

The acerola cherries have shown significantly high levels of anti-oxidant value than other "championed" Amazonian fruits such as acai, abiu, wax jambu etc. The acerola's antioxidant value is largely derived from poly-phenolic anthocyanidin compounds such as chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, pelargonidin, malvidin, tannins, cyanidin-3-glycoside, quercetin, and kaempferol.

Research studies suggest that chlorogenic acid in these acerola cherries help lower blood sugar levels and control blood-glucose levels in type-II diabetes mellitus condition.

The berries also contain a small amount of B-complex group of vitamins such as niacin, folates and pantothenic acid. It contains very good amounts of vitamin B-6, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and folic acid. These vitamins are acting as co-factors help the body metabolize carbohydrates, protein, and fats.

In addition, they also contain an adequate amount of minerals and electrolytes such as potassium, manganese, copper, iron and zinc.

The health benefits of acerola can vary widely depending on the age and state of the fruit when it’s consumed. In general, the younger and fresher the acerola fruit is the more beneficial it will be when consumed.

For example, a study published in the journal Food Science and Technology International found that immature acerola had a vitamin C and polyphenol content roughly twice as high as mature acerola.

Anti-oxidant capacity in the immature cherry against the molecule methyl linoleate was also double that of the mature fruit. A similar study published in the Journal Plant Foods and Human Nutrition found that unripe / immature acerola cherry had a greater ability to protect DNA from oxidative stress and inhibited the free radical DPHH. Based on contemporary studies the unique chemical composition of the Acerola cherry is considered to amplify the anti-oxidative (cell-protecting) effect of vitamin C.

Acerola cherry, like other berries originally found in the latin american region, is an excellent source of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid molecule that have been the subject of intense scrutiny by the medical community because of their positive health benefits.

Laboratory based experiments suggest that anthocyanins may help prevent or alleviate a variety of health ailments including cancer, diabetes, fibrocystic disease, inflammation, bacterial infections and neurological impairments.

As a natural remedy in Brazil, a handful of fresh fruit is eaten for fever and dysentery. It is also used there as an anti-inflammatory, astringent, stimulant for the liver and renal systems, diuretic, and to support heart function as well as to heal wounds. It is employed as a nutritive aid for anemia, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, liver problems, rheumatism, tuberculosis, and during convalescence.

The anti-inflammatory properties of bioflavenoids help relieve pain. That makes acerola cherries useful in treating sports injuries and leg and back discomfort.

Acerola possesses highest content of vitamin C for any plant-derived fruits/berries, probably next only to another miniature Amazonian berry, camu camu (2000 mg/100 g). Vitamin C is a wonderful natural antioxidant. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals from the blood.

Together with vitamin C, these phyto-chemical compounds in the acerola cherry help rid off harmful oxygen-derived free radicals from the body, and thereby, help boost immunity, protect the body from cancers, aging, degenerative diseases, inflammation and infections.

Acerola cherries are also very low in calories. 100 g fresh cherries provide just 32 calories. Nonetheless, these bright color cherries compose several health benefiting components such as vitamins, and pigment anti-oxidants that contribute immensely toward optimum health and wellness.

Vitamin C - Mega Dose - Acerola Cherry

The acerola cherry is mostly noted for its high concentration of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Specifically, the vitamin C content is 65 times greater than an orange, which means one acerola cherry has a vitamin C content that is equal to the recommended daily intake (RDI) requirements suggested by the U.S. FDA = 60 mg daily.

Additionally,
100g of fresh berry provides an astoundingly 1677 mg of vitamin C, which is about 1864% of daily-recommended intake (RDI / RDA) suggested by the United States FDA. However, Vitamin C scientists and doctors suggests the RDA should be significanlty higher for optimal health and disease prevention):

The United States' Vitamin C Foundation (
www.vitamincfoundation.org) recommends that every man, woman and child over the age of 3 consume at least 3,000 mg of vitamin C daily in order to enjoy optimum health. More during pregnancy (6,000 mg), and much more during periods of disease (20,000 to 300,000 mg).

Humans cannot synthesise Vitamin C and so require a daily intake. Fragile, highly unstable, and easily destroyed by heat and light, our requirement is higher than any other water soluble vitamin. As a nutrient, is needed for collagen production, an integral part of skin, tendons, bones, gums, teeth, and blood vessels, as well as growth and repair of tissue and helping to maintain normal blood fat and cholesterol levels.

Linus Pauling - Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry (www.nobelprize.org) recommends 6,000 to 12,000 mg daily.

Dr. Robert Cathcart, III, determined that the ability to tolerate oral intakes of the vitamin C vary between 4,000 and 16,000 mg daily during ordinary poor health. Dr. Cathcart's clinical experience demonstrates that virtually every human being will tolerate 4,000 mg vitamin C daily.

"The vitamin C in the acerola cherry also has a higher absorbance into the body than other natural sources.

One scientific study found that the bio-availibility of vitamin C in acerola is 1.63 times higher than that found in synthetic sources."

Anti-Oxidants - Anthocyanin Compounds - Acerola Cherry

A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry studied the anthocyanin concentrations of four amazon berries and found that acerola concentrate contained the chemical backbones of anthocyanin compounds cyanidin, delphinidin, peonidin, pelargonidin, petunidin, and malvidin.

Acerola has also demonstrated a high anti-oxidant activity. Anti-oxidants are molecules that prevent the transfer of electrons, which can cause large chain reactions within the cell that can cause damage to enzymes, proteins, lipids, and other biologically important molecules.

A study published in 2006 in the Journal Rural Science compared the anti-oxidant capacity of 14 different amazonian / latin american berries and found that acerola scored the highest.

Another study published in the April, 2004 issue of Phytotherapy Research found that acerola cherry juice extracted in acetone and hexane helped inhibit tumorous cell growth in oral squamous cell carcinoma and human submandibular gland carcinoma cell lines. Acerola may also improve the anti-oxidant capacity of other nutrients when they are consumed together.

Cancer - Oral Cancer - Extracts - Acerola Cherry

Fractionation of barbados cherry (acerola fruit) extracts showed higher cytotoxic activity against oral cancer tumor cell lines such as, human oral squamous cell carcinoma and human submandibular gland carcinoma, when compared with that against normal cells.

Acerola cherry extracts which displayed higher tumor-specific cytotoxicity also showed higher multi-drug resistance reversal activity, than the pharmaceutical drug "verapamil" which was used as positive control. The tumor specific cytotoxic activity and multi-drug resistance reversal activity of barbados cherry may suggest its possible application for cancer therapy.

Cancer - Japan - Cancer - Nuclear Radiation Protection - Vitamin C

Pretreatment with intravenous vitamin C and other oral antioxidants has been demonstrated once again to provide significant protection against radiation poisoning and cancer.

Dr. Atsuo Yanagisawa, M.D., Ph.D., from the Japanese College of IV Therapy recently conducted a study which found that Fukushima workers who underwent a high-dose vitamin C pretreatment prior to handling radioactive debris during cleanup efforts were protected against DNA damage and cancer.

The Orthomolecular Medicine News Service (OMNS) reports that Dr. Yanagisawa evaluated 16 men between the ages of 32 and 59 that worked between five and six weeks in a high-radiation area of Fukushima. Some of the men received 25,000 milligrams (mg) of intravenous vitamin C therapy along with oral intake of other powerful antioxidants like alpha-lipoic acid and vitamin E prior to entering the contaminated area, while the others received no pretreatment at all.

After taking blood samples from all the men and evaluating them for whole blood count and chemistry, as well as for plasma levels of free DNA and 47 cancer-related gene expressions, Dr. Yanagisawa and his team found that those who received the vitamin C therapy experienced no increase in cancer risk or change in free DNA.

Those who did not receive the treatment, on the other hand, had significantly increased cancer risk.

Those who did not receive pretreatment, but that received a post-treatment intervention with the same regimen for two months, however, saw their heightened free DNA levels return to normal. Their overall cancer risk score also returned back to normal, illustrating the incredible power of vitamin C and other antioxidants to protect against, and even reverse, the damage caused by radiation.

"This important clinical demonstration confirms research done nearly 20 years ago showing that pretreatment with vitamin C, by oral intake or injection, increased sperm head survival after the injection of radioactive Iodine-131 in mice," says the OMNS report.

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful nutrients in protecting against cell-damaging free radicals. And while ascorbic acid, the popular isolated version of vitamin C, has its demonstrable therapeutic uses, the camu camu berry is one of the most powerful vitamin C-rich superfoods for gaining the same health benefits naturally. The acerola cherry is also another vitamin C-dense superfood with amazing radio-protective abilities.

Worldwide - RDA - So How Much Vitamin C Should You Take?

"Vitamin C is possibly the best-researched substance in the world. There are more than 24,000 papers and articles on the authoritative clinical website, Medline. Yet virtually the all the evidence has been dismissed."

Thomas Levy M.D. argues that the medical profession has routinely ignored research showing that high doses of Vitamin C can combat bacteria, toxins and severe viral infections including avian flu, SARS, hepatitis and herpes. And this is not a case of doctors sniffing at anecdotal evidence from a handful of enthusiasts. Levy even claims that Aids can be controlled if a high enough dosage of Vitamin C is maintained.

The controversy has not put off consumers, many of whom take Vitamin C to ward off colds. The 1,000 mg capsule is the most popular single vitamin in Britain, with the 500 mg version second.

Some people argue that we can get sufficient Vitamin C from a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, but Levy disagrees ... At such times, the body begins to "metabolise unusually large amounts of vitamin C, keeping stores so depleted that the recommended daily allowance will not even prevent many of the symptoms of scurvy from developing".

Levy claims that the reason why most animals stay healthy throughout their lives, while humans spend years coping with one or more chronic diseases, is that animals make their own Vitamin C. The wild goat, for instance, makes around 13,000 mg a day, rising to 100,000 mg when faced with life-threatening infectious or toxic stress, according to a 1961 study published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.

Dr Frederick Klenner, a clinical researcher from Reidsville, North Carolina, reported that a massive intravenous dose of Vitamin C - up to 20,000mg daily for three days (today's recommended daily allowance is 60mg) - had cured 60 of his Polio patients. These findings were published in a medical journal, yet there was virtually no interest. Apart from a couple of minor trials, no attempt was made to find out if they had any scientific substance.

For a cold - Three 1,000mg doses a day, according to the campaign group Consumers for Health Choice

For flu
- Although it's more serious, the viral load is similar, according to research, and taking up to 20,000mg a day could be beneficial.

For shingles - Research has shown that this painful post-viral condition can be pretty well cured by an injection of 3,000mg of vitamin C. Taking four 1,000mg tablets orally for three days could be worthwhile as well.

For a hangover - Taking 1,000mg daily in the week before a booze-up reduces stress on the liver. If you're drunk and want to look sober, a large dose of vitamin C will prevent drunken behaviour, according to a 1986 study, "Alcohol and Alcoholism".

To maintain your health - A 1,000mg daily dose is regarded as safe by the Food Standards Agency, and adequate to keep sufficient vitamin C in the plasma and tissues. "We believe this is absolutely safe and definitely beneficial to people's health," says Sue Croft of Consumers for Health Choice.

http://www.leaflady.org/more2C.htm

The United States' Vitamin C Foundation (www.vitamincfoundation.org) recommends that every man, woman and child over the age of 3 consume at least 3,000 mg of vitamin C daily in order to enjoy optimum health. More during pregnancy (6,000 mg), and much more during periods of disease (20,000 to 300,000 mg).

Cardiovascular disease, as an example, requires from 6,000 to 18,000 mg Vitamin C daily; cancers may require 14,000 to 39,000 mg daily.’ (Excerpt from the research of Dr .Hickey & Dr. Roberts).

Lipospheric vitamin C delivers 93-98% of the vitamin directly into the body, this means that far lower doses can be taken than normal oral ascorbate, thus avoiding loose bowel movements which can often be a side effect of high doses of oral vitamin C.

According to Thomas Levy MD, lipospheric vitamin C shows a ten-fold increase in the effect of IV vitamin C:

“I found that liposome encapsulated vitamin C, taken orally, was roughly 10 times more effective clinically in resolving infectious diseases than the IVC (intravenous vitamin C). Having given thousands of IVCs and taken hundreds myself, this was difficult to comprehend, even though the clinical observation was quite straightforward. I subsequently realized that the liposome gave the ultimate bioavailability: intracellular delivery, including the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and even the nucleus… 2 to 6 packets daily covers most individuals for most situations.”

Vitamin C is safe, is not a cause of "kidney stones" (vitamin C can actually help dissolve them), and is "generally regarded as safe" (GRAS). It is recognized by the FDA to be safe and it is usually compared to the toxicity of water. Water and vitamin C are critical for human health, and generally considered non-toxic. No reports of death by vitamins are known.

Anti-Oxidants - Super Foods - Research

Two important messages are emerging from anti-oxidant research:

1. First, that the health benefits of these phytochemicals are derived from whole foods ... and not from supplements.

2. Second
, that "the synergistic effect is powerful" - in other words, antioxidant activity isn't the function of a single vitamin or nutrient alone,

...
"it is the combination of countless compounds in a fruit working together."

"The tamarind fruit pulp has been official in the British and American pharmacopoeias and most other international pharmacopoeias for its medicinal properties.

Some 200,000 lbs (90,000 kg) of the shelled fruits have been annually imported into the United States for the medicinal drug trade."

"The Bait and Switch" ... How Big Pharma Repackages Vitamins as Expensive Drugs !!!

The latest prescription medicine called Niaspan, which targeted to men and women with coronary artery disease and high cholesterol:

“...works to raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels in people with abnormal cholesterol levels ... also works to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides.”
Plus, Niaspan can "reduce the risk of another heart attack in people who have high cholesterol and a history of heart attacks."

Now, here's the thing about Niaspan... it isn't really a drug! ... it's nothing more than time-released niacin (vitamin B3)!

You can get a month's supply (without a doctor's order) from most vitamin shops for under $7. Without a doubt, you're much better off going that route... because Abbott Labs will charge you a heck of a lot more ... this profitable hoax, earning hundreds of millions of dollars for the drug giant Abbott Labs!

"The Bait and Switch" ... How Big Pharma Repackages Fish Oil as Expensive Drugs !!!

You've probably heard of a prescription drug called Lovaza, right? I chuckled when I first heard about it, because it's nothing more than refined fish oil.
But it sounds snazzy and you need a doctor's prescription for it ... so it must work better than regular fish oil, right?

Wrong. It doesn't. It contains the same active ingredients you find in fish oil: EPA and DHA.
But Big Pharma managed to fool many, many Americans with this hoax.

In fact, this kind of con is hugely profitable for Big Pharma ... earning billions of dollars for the drug giant Abbott Labs.
For this reason alone, we will see more and more vitamins magically "repackaged" and sold as drugs.

Commercially prepared acerola cherry puree may be dried or frozen for future use. The fresh juice will prevent darkening of bananas sliced for fruit cups or salads. It can be used for gelatin desserts, punch or sherbet, and has been added as an ascorbic acid supplement to other fruit juices. Fruit Grower - Information

TMF Florida Fruits

Southern Florida has long been the site of tropical and subtropical fruit production and research. Specialty tropical fruits have been part of the Florida tropical fruits research program at the TREC - Tropical Research and Educational Center - (www.trec.ifas.ufl.edu) since its establishment in 1930.

The future of tropical fruits in South Florida seems very bright, especially considering the involvement and investment of local growers in the important research efforts. The 1980's saw a major increase in the areas planted to specialty tropical fruits in southern Florida.

A wealth of International scientific and medical research (www.nutrionomics.com) supports the medical and nutritional health benefits of tropical and subtropical fruits, high in bio-natural vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other vital nutrients. Exemplary marketing campaigns supported by proven scientific research have accompanied increases in fruit production and should serve as a model for other industries and societies.

For the consumers... the immediate goal of TMF Florida is to promote the campaign for healthy living and support the finally emerging "Green Wave" in Nutrition, to help the end consumer to better understand the cardinal importance of their daily nutritional decisions, and to experience the significance of optimal bio-natural nutrition upon their health and lifestyle.

For the Florida fruit grower
... TMF Florida represents the show window for their wonderful fruits and the marketing strategy so deeply ignored in the past - based on all the internet possibilities available today and certainly increasing exponentially in the future.
