Fruit Description

Goji Berry

The Goji berry has been eaten since ancient times in Asia for its nutrition, and the stories surrounding the goji berry and its health benefits are many. In China, for example, the berry, the bark, and roots have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The berry is of such importance in China that every August in Ningxia a festival is held at the time of the goji berry harvest.

Goji berries have a complete package of nutrients, they are rich in the antioxidants beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, have more vitamin C than an orange, more beta carotene than carrots, and more iron than a steak.

Goji berries are popular among health conscious celebrities, and many mainstream stars like Oprah and Madonna who have sworn by them.  Many online companies are promoting all kinds of goji products with health claims that range from protection of the retina in your eye all the way to cancer prevention and even cure.

Goji berries are the only food known to help stimulate the human body to produce more human growtrh hormone (HGH) naturally. This factor alone makes the goji berry perhaps the world's greatest anti-aging superfood. - David Wolfe - "Superfoods" page 21.

Nutritional Information

Health Benefits - Goji Berry

The goji berry is often said to be one of the most nutritionally dense foods known, and this appears to be true. The list of nutrients, in high concentration, is very impressive ... the little red berry is packed with nutrients, over 30 essential and trace minerals including:

Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, E, manganese, zink, iron, copper, nickel, chromium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, cobalt, selenium, phosphorus and germanium, protein, omega 6, 18 amino acids, (such as isoleucine, tryptophan, leucine, and arginine), plant-derived polyphenolic antioxidants; carotenoids such as beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein, beta-cryptoxanthin, and lycopene.

Goji berries also contains a lot of polysaccharides, some of which are unique for the berry. These Lycium Barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) were thought to be ordinary carbohydrates like starch or sugar but they have been found to play an important role in our bodies.

That list may help explain why goji berries have an impressive high ORAC (anti-oxidant) score. Goji berry is truly the best food to up your body's antioxidant activity.

However, even that long list of nutrients above may not be the full story behind goji berry's health benefits and high free radical scavenging power in the body. In science, there's something known as synergism, and it basically means that the total effect is greater than the individual effects added together. In some cases, one agent helps stabilize or even promote another agent, for example vitamins C and E protecting and perhaps even potentiating each other in the human body.

This has lead to studies showing the berries to be anti-cancer, as well as helpful to make other diseases included vision related diseases and inflammatory diseases.

The bottom line is that goji's long list of concentrated nutrients in combination with its nearly unique ability to raise superoxide dismutase levels in the body IS A BIG DEAL! Raising superoxide dismutase activity has been proven to help prevent damage to the skin, eye, pancreas, and other organs and tissues, and to reduce pain and inflammation in arthritis.

Higher superoxide dismutase levels over a period of years should have an enormous impact on health, energy, and maybe even longevity.

Clinical Studies - Amino Acids - Compounds - Enzymes - Goji Berry

Goji has been clinically proven to:

- alleviate depression,

- discourage premature aging,

- fight fatigue,

- improve mental clarity,

- improve sleep quality,
- increase energy levels,

- increase low sex drive and fertility,

- support healthy blood pressure levels,

- support balanced blood sugar.

Goji berry possesses anti-inflammatory activity, and is a strong and very powerful antioxidant. Goji juice contains the following naturally occurring organic elements: 19 Amino Acids, 21 trace minerals, more Vitamin C than oranges, Vitamin E and Solavetivone, a powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial compound.

The Lycium Barbarum’s five major Polysaccharides are the most important compounds and are responsible for much of Goji’s powerful beneficial effects. What makes this product rise above all others is the fact that NOTHING else is added to it. No water, no extra fruit juice and no added flavorings

Anti-Oxidants - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

Scientific researchers from major universities around the world are confirming goji’s remarkable health benefits. The vast majority of this research is focused on goji’s unique polysaccharide molecules. To date, more than 80 studies have already been published in prestigious health journals.

Goji berries have been traditionally regarded as a longevity, strength-building, and sexual potency food of the highest order. In several study groups with elderly people the berry was given once a day for 3 weeks, many beneficial results were experienced and 67% of the patients T cell transformation functions tripled and the activity of the patients white cell interleukin-2 doubled.

In addition, the results showed that all the patients spirit and optimism increased significantly, appetite improved in 95% of the patients, 95% of the patients slept better, and 35% of the patients partially recovered their sexual function.

Betaine - Natural Compounds - Goji Berry

Betaine (pronounced, BEET-uh-een) is a substance made naturally in the human body where it is involved in liver function, cellular reproduction, and helping to make carnitine and choline, for example. However, due to toxicosis causing impaired metabolic and cellular functions, the human body may not produce any betaine at all, or in insufficient quantities. which can lead to numerous chronic degenerative disease conditions.

Betaine compounds found in goji berry protects DNA and provide methyl groups in the body’s energy reactions and can help reduce levels of homocysteine. Betaine helps the body metabolize homocysteine, an amino acid. Elevated levels of homocysteine indicate a prime risk factor in heart disease.

Increased amounts of homocysteine in the body can cause other symptoms such as extreme tiredness, seizures, dislocation of the lens of the eye, abnormal bone structure, osteoporosis (weak bones), blood clots, or decreased weight or rate of weight gain and slowed development in children.

Betaine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat resulting conditions where too much homocysteine builds up in the body. It works by decreasing the amount of homocysteine in the blood. Betaine is prescribed by U.S. doctors in a class of medications called nutrients.

Source: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a608012.html

Fortunately, betaine can be found naturally (and at significantly less cost than pharmaceutical drug prices) in the Goji Berry. Research has shown the synergistic effects of the bio-natural packaging of vitamins, nutrients and enzymes found in natural foods, as having significantly more powerful and beneficial effects in the human body, when compared with isolating and purifying extracts in supplement and pill forms.

The betaine compound found in Goji berries is known to calms nervous feelings and enhance memory and cognitive functions. Betaine also promotes muscle growth and protects the liver against fatty liver disease.

Goji berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine as a mild Yin tonic, enriching Yin in liver, kidneys and moistening lung Yin. Indications derive from the Yin nourishing effect. They include blurry vision and diminished visual acuity, infertility, abdominal pain, dry cough, fatigue, and headache.

A decoction of the root bark is effective for treating cough and recommended against hemoptysis and hematuria [13]. Finally it is indicated for
the treatment of diabetes mellitus and hypertension.

Adrenal Health - Adaptogen - Goji Berry

Asia: Goji berries are considered to be an especially beneficial adaptogen in Asia. The goji is believed to harmonize functions of the entire body, resulting in enhanced stamina, strength and energy.

The goji berry is an "adaptogen," a term used in the world of medicinal plants to describe a substance with a combination of therapeutic actions. An adaptogen invigorates and strengthens the system while helping the body to deal with stress without collapsing. It also supports the healthy function of the adrenal glands, which tend to get overworked in times of stress.

Allergies - Psoriasis - Goji Berry

Dosage Level = 30 to 60 Goji Berry Daily:
In a study of goji berry reported in the Journal of the Beijing Medical University (1992), it was noted that goji reduced antibodies associated with allergy-type reactions, which was presumed to be accomplished through the mechanisms of promoting CD8(+) T-cells and regulating cytokines. The berry has also been shown to mitigate the effects of psoriasis, presumably because of its antibody-reducing properties.

Anti-Aging Health - Anti-Oxidants - Superoxide Dismutase - Goji Berry

Without constant protection, our DNA can be damaged by anything from toxins to bad food to normal daily activities. This damage leaves our body vulnerable to any imaginable illness and premature aging.

Goji berry provides natural protection in the form of antioxidants, and the research has shown that the goji berry is loaded with age defying, disease preventing antioxidants. Its ORAC value (the value a food is given for its protective potency) is far higher than blueberries, pomegranates, oranges, or raspberries, all of which are powerful antioxidants themselves. Goji berry contain superoxide dismutase (SOD), the antioxidant that scavenges one of the most damaging free radicals in the body.

In his 2003 book entitled "The Metabolic Plan", Stephen Cherniske reported that beyond having enough of the nutrient precursors for superoxide dismutase in your body, there was not much that could be done to slow down the age-related decline in superoxide dismutase activity.

Fast forward just two or three years, and suddenly we have research showing that consumption of goji berry actually increases superoxide dismutase activity in the body! Goji's polysaccharides are now under investigation as one of the main ingredients responsible for the stimulation of superoxide dismutase activity in the body.

A study in Mongolia showed that patients eating the goji berry had a significant increase in lymphocyte activity and that their blood began to resemble that of much younger persons.

Anti-Aging Health - Secretagogue - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

Research studies report that the unique LBP polysaccharide complex found in the Goji berry has been found to be a powerful secretagogue - a substance that strengthens the immune system, as well as, stimulates the secretion of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) by the pituitary gland. As we get older, we produce less and less HGH. Increased levels of HGH contribute to rejuventation and anti-aging. Goji berries have been traditionally regarded in Asian as a longevity, strengthbuilding, and sexual potency food of the highest order.

In several China study groups with elderly people, the berry was given once a day for three weeks. Many beneficial results were experienced. Nearly 70 percent of patients made impressive gains in their immune defense systems, with a tripling of T-cell transformation functions and a doubling of activity of white cell interleukin-2 (IL-2).

The results also showed that spirit and optimism increased significantly in all patients. Additionally, nearly all patients reported improved appetite and better quality of sleep. More than 35 percent of the patients saw a marked recovery of sexual function. Zhang (1993) studied the role of goji's unique LBP polysaccharides in fighting peroxidation, a primary cause of premature cell death.

Dr. Zhang and his team measured the changes in the electrical parameters of
cell membranes after incubating living cells in a solution containing dangerous free radicals for six hours. They observed that the deadly effects of free radicals on the cells can be prevented and reversed by incubation with LBP polysaccharide cell membranes after incubating living cells in a solution containing dangerous free radicals for six hours.

Another three-year clinical study investigated the effects of the goji berry on the immune, physiological and biochemical indexes of the blood of aged volunteers. The results indicated that the goji berry caused the blood of older people to revert to a markedly younger state.

Anti-Aging - Hormones - HGH - Sesuiterpenoids - Goji Berry

Goji berries are the only food known to help stimulate the human body to produce more HGH naturally. This factor alone makes the goji berry perhaps the world's greatest anti-aging superfood.
The goji berry's high levels of nutrients stimulate and support the production of this vital anti-aging hormone.

The anti-aging sesuiterpenoids found in goji berries (cyperone & solavetivone) stimulate the pituitary and pineal glands, which increases the glandular production of HGH. People who see NDs or holistic M.D.s usually are taking some sort of HGH along with l-glutamine and l-arginine to promote the production of HGH. Well, goji berries are a rich source of both these amino acids that work together to boost the bodies natural hormone production, which jumpstarts your metabolism.

China: A purified component of lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP-X) was isolated from lycium barbarum L. by DEAE ion-exchange cellulose and sephacryl gel chromatography. LBP-X was tested on five different doses (5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg.kg-1.d-1) in mice. The results showed that LBP-X induced a remarkable adaptability to exercise load, enhanced resistance and accelerated elimination of fatigue.

LBP-X could enhance the storage of muscle and liver glycogen, increase the activity of LDH before and after swimming, decrease the increase of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) after strenuous exercise, and accelerate the clearance of BUN after exercise. The dosage of LBP-X 10 mg.kg-1.d-1 was the best amount among the five tested doses.

Arthritis - Anti-Inflammatory - Superoxide Dsimutase - Goji Berry

The inflammatory free radical most often implicated in arthritis is known as the superoxide anion. Under normal conditions, the body is able to keep superoxide anions in check by producing the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) to intercept and neutralize them before they can cause pain, inflammation and cell damage.

Extensive scientific research over the past 20 years has shown that, in acute and chronic inflammation, superoxide anions are produced at a rate that overwhelms the capacity of the body's SOD enzyme defense system to remove them. Such an imbalance results in superoxide-rnediated damage. Protective and beneficial roles of SOD have been shown in a broad range of diseases, both preclinically and clinically.

The results from the latter studies prove the concept that superoxide anions have an important role in human disease, and that their removal by SOD does in fact result in beneficial outcome
.

The study in China
found that the ingestion of goji resulted in a remarkable 40 percent increase of this extremely important anti-inflammatory enzyme.

Auto-Immune Disorders - Immunity - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

One in five Americans suffer from an auto-immune disease. Three out of four are women. Goji berries help the immune system to distinguish more effectively between friendly cells and foes. The fruit's polysaccharides provide cells with special sugars that support healthy immunity and enable cells to communicate more effectively with each other.

Author and pharmacist Earl Mindell
calls goji's polysaccharides "master molecules" because they "command and control many of the body's most important biochemical defense systems."

Brain Health - Alzeihmer's - Memory - Betaine - Choline - Goji Berry

Goji berries contain betaine, which is used by the liver to produce choline, which is a chemical compound that calms nervous feelings and enhances memory. Betaine also promotes muscle growth and protects the liver against fatty liver disease.

In addition to antioxidants that protect against free-radical damage to the brain, goji berries fight narrowing of the arteries that deliver oxygen and nutrients to brain cells. The fruit also helps our bodies produce choline, an essential nutrient that combats free radical damage linked to Alzheimer's disease. The combined effect supports healthy brain function.

Cancer - Anti-Oxidants - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

Anti-oxidants are proving to prevent cancer.  This is because antioxidants remove free radicals from your system.  Free radicals are cells that have the potential to turn cancerous.  Goji berries are one of the highest rated fruits for antioxidants (ORAC scale).

Interleukin-2 is a cell protein that has been shown to be useful in battling cancerous tumors. The body's natural production of interleukin-2 can be boosted with the ingestion of the polysaccharides contained in certain plant foods. Goji berries are rich in these plant polysaccharides, and their beneficial effect on interleukin-2 productivity was reported in a 1989 study published by the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxiciology in Beijing.

Cancer - Apoptosis - Ellagic Acid - Polyphenols - Goji Berry

Flavanoids and polyphenols are a wide group of plant pigments that have exceptional antioxidant capabilities. This includes ellagic acid which has been found to cause apoptosis, an anti-cancer effect in the body. Goji has a polyphenol content that is one of the highest values for any food yet tested.

Cancer - Polysaccarides - LPB's - Goji Berry

China: Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a crucial cytokine (cell protein) that induces potent anti-tumor responses in a variety of cancer models. Several plant polysaccharides have been shown to enhance the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2). Goji LBPs are particularly active in this regard; the enhancing effect of LBP on IL-2 activity was reported by the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology in Beijing (1989).

Other studies from China show that goji berry inhibits the gene mutation induced by TA98 and TAI00. Some scientists believe that goji may be a very good supplement to prevent liver cancer because it exerts liver protection and anticancer effects at the same time.

United States: In the U.S., IL-2 has been under study as an immune promoting factor since 1983, used for some cancers and for HIV infection.

Cancer - Colon - Lung - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

Shanghai, China: In one of the most positive studies yet conducted with goji, 79 advanced cancer patients were treated with the drug LAK/IL-2 combined with goji LBPs in a clinical trail studied by Cao GW et al (1994) at "Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, China"

Their initial results indicated an
amazing regression of cancer in patients with malignant melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and malignant hydrothorax.

The response rate was an astonishing 40.9 percent for the patients treated with LAK/IL-2 plus goji LBp, while the response rate for patients treated with LAK/IL-2 alone was only 16.1 percent. They also observed that the remission of cancers in patients treated with LAK/IL-2 plus goji lasted significantly longer than those treated without goji. Their results indicated that goji berry polysaccharides can be used as an adjuvant in cancer therapy.

Another study from China showed LBP increased the sensitivity to radiation therapy and enhanced the immune system for cancer patients. In one study on a group of cancer patients, the goji berry triggered an increase in both lymphocyte transformation rate and white blood cell count (measures of immune function). The effect and the mechanism of LBP on inhibiting the growth of human leukemia HL-60 cells were examined.

LBP could inhibit the growth of these leukemia cells, and also could induce their death (apoptosis).

Lewis Lung cancer cells were transplanted in C57 BL mice, and the anticancer effects of both goji polysaccharides and radiation were measured. Following the test, it was concluded that goji enhanced the effects of radiation in combating Lewis Lung cancer.

Cancer - Skin - Immune Protection - Anti-Oxidants - Goji Berry

Goji berry juice offers "significant protection" against skin cancer, according to scientists. The berry, Lycium barbarum, has long been recognised in traditional Chinese medicine for various therapeutic properties based on its antioxidant and immune modulating effects.

Australia:
Scientists at the University of Sydney have now shown that liquid containing just five per cent goji berry juice "significantly reduced" the inflammatory oedema (fluid retention) of the sunburn reaction in hairless mice. Their results are published in the Royal Society of Chemistry's journal Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences.

Scientists compared the effects of Himalayan Goji Juice, containing 89 per cent goji juice and approximately eight per cent other fruit juices (grape, pear, apple and pear puree) added for flavour, with those of JustJuice apple and pear from Woolworths. The fruit juices were diluted with pre-boiled and cooled tap water and were offered to the mice freshly prepared every day. Mice not given goji juice had a marked sunburn inflammatory reaction that developed over the following 48 hours.

Goji berry juice drinking mice were found to have a significantly reduced oedema at each measurement point until 48 hours. The inflammatory sunburn reaction was strongly reduced. Minor components of other fruit juices (pear and apple) did not contribute to the goji berry juice protection, nor did additional vitamin C.

Vivienne E. Reeve, of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney, said: "The immune protection could not be ascribed to either the minor excipients in the goji juice, pear and apple juice, nor the vitamin C content, nor the preservative, and appeared to be a property of the goji berry itself. Antioxidant activity in the skin was demonstrated by the significant protection by five per cent goji juice against lipid peroxidation induced by UVA radiation."

Dr Reeve said this, and another recent study showing humans aged 55-72 years drinking whole goji berry juice reported improvements in antioxidant activity, demonstrates that "the goji berry has significant and complex antoixidant properties when included in the human diet."

"This study is the first to identify the amelioration of photodamage in the skin by oral goji berry juice consumption. The other identified components of the goji berry also provide potential immune regulatory and anti-cancer possibilites.

This study has revealed in the mouse, properties of oral goji berry juice that offer significant protection against UV radiation induced inflammatory sunburn, immune suppression and oxidative stress, factors recognised as prerequisite contributors to the creation of cancer. Therefore goji berry juice might prove to be useful in preventing skin cancer development in susceptible humans."

China: The goji berry has a long history of health applications that 'nourish the blood, enrich the yin' in Chinese medicine dating back to the 7th century Tang dynasty. Several published studies in Chinese literature report medicinal benefits such as antioxidant properties, protection against inflammatory diseases, vision-related diseases, neurological diseases as well as anti-cancer and immunomodulatory effects.

In vitro studies suggest that goji berries kill many kinds of cancer cells. The mechanism is believed to involve an enzymatic factor that inhibits cancer cell division, thus lowering its reproductive capacity.

A large study in Japan suggested that tumor growth was inhibited by 58% among the patients eating goji berry as compared to the control groups.

China: A polysaccharide-protein complex from Lycium barbarum upregulates cytokine expression in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells:
The production of cytokine is a key event in the initiation and regulation of an immune response. Many compounds are now used routinely to modulate cytokine production, and therefore the immune response, in a wide range of diseases, such as cancer. Interleukin-2 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha are two important cytokines in antitumor immunity.

In this study by Gan L, et al. (2003) , results showed administration of LBP(3p) increased the expression of interleukin-2 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha at both mRNA and protein levels in a dose-dependent manner. The results suggest that LBP(3p) may induce immune responses and possess potential therapeutic efficacy in cancer.

Disease Resistance - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

G
oji berries contain unique compounds known as Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, most often referred to as polysaccharides. Research has shown that these compounds enhance the body's ability to resist disease. Goji's polysaccharides have a chemical structure similar to substances found in echinacea and maitake mushrooms, herbs known for their ability to support a healthy immune system.

United States: Goji berries are also a rich source of vitamin C and zinc, both of which are known to protect against disease and aid in recovery. Research at Case Western Reserve University has shown that zinc can shorten the length and severity of a cold. Zinc deficiencies are more likely to occur as we age and produce less stomach acid.

Vitamin C, an antioxidant, is needed for:

  • growth and repair of all human tissues
  • formation of collagen in skin, scar tissue, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels
  • wound healing
  • healthy cartilage, bones and teeth

Zinc, also an antioxidant, is needed for:

  • regulation of appetite, taste and smell
  • controlling stress
  • normal growth and function
  • healthy reproductive function in men and women

Heart Health 1. - Antioxidants - Superoxide Dismutase - Goji Berry

The accumulation of lipid peroxides in the blood can lead to cardiovascular disease, heart attack, atherosclerosis and stroke. Our blood contains the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) to fight against lipid peroxidation, but levels of SOD decrease as we age.

China: In a clinical study, goji berry consumption was accompanied by a remarkable 40 percent increase in SOD levels, and a decrease in lipid peroxides of an impressive 65 percent. In another study, vital red blood cells were protected by flavonoids found in goji berries. The protective effects of the total flavonoids of Lycium barbarum goji berries on lipid peroxidation in liver mitochondria and
red blood cells of rats induced by oxygen radicals was investigated by Huang Y et al (1999) in China.

They observed that the mitochondria lipid peroxidation was significantly inhibited by the total flavonoids ofLycium barbarum and the fluidity of mitochondria membrane was also protected effectively. The shape of red blood cell has remained intact for those with the addition of total goji berry flavonoids, while the shape of the control red blood cells was significantly damaged by oxygen radicals

Heart Health 2. - Betaine - Beta-Sitosterol - Cyperone - Goji Berry

In Eastern medicine, goji berry are said to correct chi deficiency, meaning that people with low energy, insomnia, heart palpitations, and even anxiety are more comfortable after consuming goji berries.

Goji berry contains Betaine which can helpsprotect DNA and reduce levels of homocysteine, which is a main risk factor in heart disease. Studies suggest that betaine, along with vitamins B6 and B12 and folic acid, helps reduce elevated levels of homocysteine. Betaine also provides methyl groups in the body's energy reactions and can help reduce levels of homocysteine.

Goji berry contains Cyperone, a sesquiterpene that benefits the heart and blood pressure, alleviates menstrual discomfort, and has been used in the treatment of cervical cancer.

Goji berry contains Beta-Sitosterol, an anti-inflammatory agent. Beta-Sitosterol also lowers cholesterol and has been used to treat sexual impotence and prostate enlargement.

Heart Health 4. - Blood Pressure - Cholesterol - Goji Berry

China: Controlling Cholesterol and Blood Pressure
- Goji berries have the ability to combat two key factors that promote heart disease: oxidized cholesterol and elevated blood pressure. Cholesterol becomes especially dangerous when it oxidizes as a result of free radicals, and the oxidized blood fats then attach to artery walls as plaque. Our bodies have a built-in defense system, an enzyme called superoxide dismutase (SOD).

SOD produces antioxidants to prevent cholesterol from oxidizing, but levels of SOD decline as we age. Chinese research shows that goji berries can increase our production of SOD, reducing oxidization of cholesterol. Goji berries also contain other antioxidants that decrease oxidation of cholesterol and help to control blood pressure.

Hormone Health - HGH - Sesuiterpenoids - Goji Berry

Research has shown that these compounds enhance the body's ability to resist disease. Goji's polysaccharides have a chemical structure similar to substances found in echinacea and maitake mushrooms, herbs known for their ability to support a healthy immune system.

China:
Goji berries can strengthen the body's immune system by ramping up the activity of its most potent disease-fighting cells. In a study published in "Recent Advances in Chinese Herbal Drugs", polysaccharides from goji berries were shown to increase the production of T-cells, cytotoxic T-cells and natural killer cells.

In scientific studies, a polysaccharide (a complex sugar) isolated from the Goji berry has been shown to have anti-cancer effects (Gan L, 2001). Lycium barbarum also shows some immune-enhancing properties (Gan L, 2003).

Immune Health 2 - Intestinal Bacteria - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

Goji berry polysaccharides are also one of the preferred fuel sources of good intestinal bacteria. These bacteria help to orchestrate a healthy immune response as well. By supporting the immune cells and probiotic cells with their preferred fuel these polysaccharides present in goji berries modulate immunity and reduce inflammation.

Famous author and pharmacist Earl Mindell believes that these polysaccharides are master molecules because of their influence on many of the body's biochemical defense systems.

These polysaccharides are very effective at enhancing detoxification within the body. They aid in the removal of metabolic waste products such as lactic acid that accumulates in muscles during exertion. They also support the liver and protect it from damage that may occur during intense periods of exercise.

In Asia, goji berries have been used as a cultural medicinal for inflammatory based disorders such as asthma, allergies, chronic pain, and cancer.

The polysaccharides also show promise in blunting auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Crohn's disease.

Goji berries are also a rich source of sesquiterpenoids which help to stimulate human growth hormone secretion by the pituitary gland. This is the only known food source that is known to stimulate HGH. Additionally, goji berries contain L-arginine and L-glutamine, along with potassium. These nutrients further promote growth hormone production.

These key nutrients synergize to have a very powerful effect on the key endocrine glands such as the adrenals, thymus, thyroid, and pituitary. Goji berries can be classified as an adaptogenic aid in that they enhance the body's ability to successfully adapt to stress. This unique array of supernutrients make goji berries one of the world's premier foods for optimal performance and longevity.

Immune Health 3 - China Studies - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

China: In a review of research on the goji berry appearing in "Recent Advances in Chinese Herbal Drugs", Dr. Zhou jlnhuang points out that polysaccharides from goji berries enhance cell-mediated and humoral immune response  LBP polysaccharides could increase activity of the body's most powerful disease-fighting immune cells (T-cells, cytotoxic T-cells and natural killer cells) in laboratory animals.

Many studies have shown the goji berry to increase the lymphocyte transformation rate and improve the macrophage phagocytic ftmction in animals.LBP assists spleen lymphocyte transformation induced by Concavalin A. LBP increases the antibody reaction to T-cell-dependent antigen (SRBC) , which means that LBP selectively strengthens the T-cell immune response. LBP enhances the T-cell immune response by increasing the number of E receptors on the surface of T-cells or increasing the numbers of T-cells directly. LBP also can be used to reduce lead toxicity because it inhibits the reduction of T-cells and delayed allergy activity induced by lead.

China: One study was done on seniors in China. This study showed after taking goji berries, lysozyme, IgG and IgA in serum increased in all participants. The activity of interleukin 2 (IL-2) was found to increase 2.26 fold in two-thirds of the participants
.

In scientific studies, a polysaccharide (a complex sugar) isolated from the Goji berry has been shown to have anti-cancer effects (Gan L, 2001). Lycium barbarum also shows some immune-enhancing properties (Gan L, 2003).

Infertility - Polysaccharides - Goji Berry

Goji berries have long been used by Asian physicians for the treatment of infertility. However, the active ingredients and the mechanism of action remain unknown. Wang Y et al (2002) tried to explore this area by studying the effect of goji polysaccharides (LBP) on cultured sperm epithelial cells.

They reported that LBP inhibited hyperthermia-induced structural damage in murine seminiferous epithelium, in vitro. They also found that the goji polysaccharides extended the life of the cells.  Oxidative stress was reported to be a major cause of structural degradation and cell death in testicular cells.

Wang Yet al (2002) assayed the effect ofLBP on ultra-violet (UV) light-induced lipid peroxidation and cytochrome c reduction by free radicals. They found that the polysaccharides of goji berry were potent inhibitors of both reactions. Results demonstrated the anti-oxidant mechanism of action for the protective effect of LBP and provided a scientific basis for the traditional use of goji berry for treatment of infertility

Overall Health - Physical - Psychological - Goji Berry

People who drank goji berry juice for two weeks experienced improvements in several measures of overall physical and psychological well-being, in a study funded and conducted by the goji berry juice company FreeLife International and published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Researchers assigned 35 healthy adults to consume 120 milliliters of either FreeLife GoChi juice or a similarly colored and flavored placebo for two weeks. This followed a two-week washout period, during which participants had not consumed any dietary supplements, energy drinks, green tea, or products containing goji berries.

Both at the beginning and end of the study, participants were asked to rate their general feelings of well-being, their neurological and psychological states, and any health problems including those of the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal or musculoskeletal systems.

After two weeks, eighty percent of participants in the berry juice group reported improved sleep quality, 50 to 60 percent reported improved feelings of contentment, happiness and good health, and 50 percent reported increased athletic performance and energy and decreased fatigue.

There were also significant improvements in calmness, ability to focus on activities, and gastrointestinal function.

Non-significant verbally reported benefits included healthier skin, harder nails, an increase in sexual activity and performance, and a decrease in menstrual pain.

Goji berries help the body effectively deal with stress, emotional, physical, and environmental. They especially balance the adrenal glands, which tend to become exhausted through stress. Healthy adrenal glands and good stress coping is absolutely vital for maintaining energy and overall vibrance.

Goji berries have been used in the traditional medicinal practices of China and other Asian countries for thousands if years to improve the health of the eyes, kidney and liver and to fight the effects of aging. The current study is the first outside of China to scientifically examine the effects of goji berry juice consumption. The amount of juice used was equivalent to 150 grams of fresh fruit, the same amount recommended in traditional Chinese medicine.

Allergies - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 30 – 60ml. daily

China: In a study of Goji berry reported in the Journal of the Beijing Medical University (1992), it was noted that Goji reduced antibodies associated with allergy-type reactions, which was presumed to be accomplished through the mechanisms of promoting CD8(+) T-cells and regulating cytokines. Probably as a result of this activity, GOJI berry has also been reported to be a useful treatment for psoriasis.

Anti-Aging - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 30 – 60ml. daily

Goji’s unique LBP polysaccharide complex has been found to be a powerful secretagogue (a substance that stimulates the secretion of rejuvenative human growth hormone by the pituitary gland). Goji berries have been traditionally regarded as a longevity, strengthbuilding, and sexual potency food of the highest order.

In several study groups with elderly people, the berry was given once a day for three weeks.

China: Zhang (1993) studied the role of Goji’s unique LBP polysaccharides in fighting peroxidation, a primary cause of premature cell death. Dr. Zhang and his team measured the changes in the electrical parameters of cell membranes after incubating living cells in a solution containing dangerous free radicals for six hours. They observed that the deadly effects of free radicals on the cells can be prevented and reversed by incubation with LBP polysaccharides.

Arthritis & Inflammatory Conditions - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 60ml. daily

Extensive scientific research over the past 20 years has shown that, in acute and chronic inflammation, superoxide anions are produced at a rate that overwhelms the capacity of the body’s SOD enzyme defense system to remove them. Such an imbalance results in superoxide-mediated damage. Protective and beneficial roles of SOD have been shown in a broad range of diseases, both preclinically and clinically.

The results from the latter studies prove the concept that superoxide anions have an important role in human disease, and that their removal by SOD does in fact result in beneficial outcomes.

China: One study in China found that the ingestion of Goji resulted in a remarkable 40 percent increase of this extremely important anti-inflammatory enzyme.

Athletic Performance / Energy - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: up to 75ml. daily

An animal study showed that Goji’s LBP polysaccharides induced a remarkable increase in exercise tolerance and stamina, and helped to eliminate fatigue. Goji LBP enhances glycogen storage (glycogen is the body’s primary energy fuel). Goji LBP also helps in post-workout recovery. It may limit sore muscles by increasing activity of the lactic acid removing enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. It also accelerates clearance of blood urea nitrogen, a toxin produced during exercise.

Blood Builder - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 30ml. daily

China: A study in China showed LBP facilitated stem cell proliferation and increased the number of monocytes in bone marrow. LBP helps the monocytes to convert to matured leukocytes.

The berry has also been used in a number of recent clinical trials for treatment of bone marrow deficiency conditions (low production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets).

Another three-year clinical study investigated the effects of the GOJI berry on the immune, physiological and biochemical indexes of the blood of aged volunteers. The results indicated that the GOJI berry caused the blood of older people to revert to a markedly younger state.

Cancer Prevention - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 30ml. daily

China: Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a crucial cytokine (cell protein) that induces potent anti-tumor responses in a variety of cancer models. Several plant polysaccharides have been shown to enhance the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2). Goji LBP’s are particularly active in this regard; the enhancing effect of LBP on IL-2 activity was reported by the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology in Beijing (1989).

China: Other studies from China show that Goji berry inhibits the gene mutation induced by TA98 and TA100. Some scientists believe that Goji may be a very good supplement to prevent liver cancer because it exerts liver protection and anticancer effects at the same time.

United States: In the U.S., IL-2 has been under study as an immune promoting factor since 1983, used for some cancers and for HIV infection.

Cancer Management - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 60 – 120ml. daily

China: In one of the most positive studies yet conducted with Goji, 79 advanced cancer patients were treated with the drug LAK/IL-2 combined with Goji LBPs in a clinical trail studied by Cao GW et al (1994) at Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, China. Initial results indicated an amazing regression of cancer in patients with malignant melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and malignant hydrothorax.

China: Another study from China showed LBP increased the sensitivity to radiation therapy and enhanced the immune system for cancer patients.

Cardiovascular Health - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 60ml. daily

The accumulation of lipid peroxides in the blood can lead to cardiovascular disease, heart attack, atherosclerosis and stroke. Our blood contains theantioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) to fight against lipidperoxidation, but levels of SOD decrease as we age.

In a clinical study, Goji berry consumption was accompanied by a remarkable 40 percent increase in SOD levels, and a decrease in lipid peroxides of an impressive 65 percent. In another study, vital red blood cells were protected by flavonoids found in Goji berries.

China: The protective effects of the total flavonoids of Lyceum barbarum Goji berries on lipid peroxidation in liver mitochondria and red blood cells of rats induced by oxygen radicals was investigated by Huang Y et al (1999) in China. They observed that the mitochondria lipid peroxidation was significantly inhibited by the total flavonoids of Lyceum barbarum and the fluidity of mitochondria membrane was also protected effectively. The shape of red blood cell has remained intact for those with the addition of total Goji berry flavonoids, while the shape of the control red blood cells was significantly damaged by oxygen radicals.

Diabetes (Adult-Onset, Non-Insulin-Dependent) - Dosage - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 30ml. twice daily

China: Goji has been used in China for the treatment of adult-onset diabetes for many years, as it is said to balance blood sugar and insulin response.

Gastrointestinal Disorders - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 45ml. immediately before meals

Mongolia: The Mongolian Institute of Traditional Medicine reported that Goji has been used in the treatment of atrophic gastritis, which is defined as weakened digestion due to reduced stomach activity. Patients consumed 10 grams of the whole fruits each time, three times daily before meals for two months and longer with excellent results.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 45ml. daily

China: The effects of Lyceum barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) on endothelial function were observed by Jia YX et al (1998) in China. Their results showed that the increase of blood pressure in the hypertensive rats could be prevented significantly by the treatment with Goji LBP.

Immunity - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 30 – 90ml. daily

China: In a review of research on the Goji berry appearing in Recent Advances in Chinese Herbal Drugs, Dr. Zhou Jinhuang points out that polysaccharides from Goji berries enhance cell-mediated and humoral immune responses.

Even at a dose of just 5-10 mg/kg daily for one week (equivalent to 60- 120ml of standardized Goji juice), LBP polysaccharides could increase activity of the body’s most powerful disease-fighting immune cells (T-cells, cytotoxic T-cells and natural killer cells) in laboratory animals.
Many studies have shown the GOJI berry to increase the lymphocyte transformation rate and improve the macrophage phagocytic function in animals. LBP assists spleen lymphocyte transformation induced by Concavalin A.

LBP increases the antibody reaction to T-cell-dependent antigen (SRBC), which means that LBP selectively strengthens the T-cell immune response. LBP enhances the T-cell immune response by increasing the number of E receptors on the surface of T-cells or increasing the numbers of T-cells directly. LBP also can be used to reduce lead toxicity because it inhibits the reduction of T-cells and delayed allergy activity induced by lead.

China: Another study was done on seniors in China. This study showed after taking Goji berries, lysozyme, IgG and IgA in serum increased in all participants. The activity of interleukin 2 (IL-2) was found to increase 2.26 fold in two-thirds of the participants.

Infertility - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 75ml. daily for four months

Asia: Goji berries have long been used by Asian physicians for the treatment of infertility. However, the active ingredients and the mechanism of action remain unknown.

China: Wang Y et al (2002) tried to explore this area by studying the effect of Goji polysaccharides (LBP) on cultured sperm epithelial cells. They reported that LBP inhibited hyperthermia-induced structural damage in murine seminiferous epithelium, in vitro. They also found that the Goji polysaccharides extended the life of the cells. Oxidative stress was reported to be a major cause of structural degradation and cell death in testicular cells.

China: Wang Y et al (2002) assayed the effect of LBP on ultra-violet (UV) light-induced lipid peroxidation and cytochrome reduction by free radicals. They found that the polysaccharides of Goji berry were potent inhibitors of both reactions. Their results demonstrated the anti-oxidant mechanism of action for the protective effect of LBP and provided a scientific basis for the traditional use of Goji berry for treatment of infertility.

Liver Protection - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 15-30ml. daily

A new cerebroside was isolated from the Goji berry that could protect the liver cells of rats from the toxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride. In a further study, Kim SY et al (1999) postulated that the Lyceum cerebrosides may preserve hepatic mitochondrial levels of glutathione by scavenging reactive oxygen species produced and thereby reduce lipid peroxidation and cellular damage.

Obesity - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 30ml. morning, 30ml. afternoon

The Goji berry has also been tested as an anti-obesity drug. Patients were given a tea made of the dried berries each morning and each afternoon. Results were excellent with most patients losing significant weight. In an animal study, it was shown that Goji polysaccharides enhanced the conversion of food into energy, and reduced body weight.

Periodontal Disease - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 15ml. as mouth rinse

China: The effects of GOJI on attachment and growth of human gingival fibroblasts to root surfaces in vitro were investigated by Liu B (1992) at Fourth Military Medical University in Xian, China. His results revealed that LBP (Goji polysaccharides), even at low doses, could improve attachment and growth of fibroblast on the planed diseased root surfaces to a certain extent. His results suggested that GOJI may improve the formation of new attachment of periodontal tissue.

Sexual Dysfunction - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 30-60ml. daily

Asia: The Goji berry is given to treat sexual impotence. It was reported that by taking the berry orally, it could markedly increase androgen levels in the blood, making patients feel more energetic. The Goji berry is also legendary for helping to spark the passions. In fact, an old Chinese proverb cautions men who are traveling far from their wives and families: “He who travels one thousand kilometers from home should not eat Goji!”

Vision Improvement - Daily Dosages - Goji Berry

Usual dosage level: 15ml. daily

China: Goji berries were very popular for their vision improvement properties in ancient China. Modern Chinese scientists found Goji berries able to reduce dark adapting time and improve vision under subdued light. Physiologic scotoma (blind spots) decreased and vitamin A increased in patients after taking Goji berries.

Anti-Oxidants - Super Foods - Research

Two important messages are emerging from anti-oxidant research:

1. First, that the health benefits of these phytochemicals are derived from whole foods ... and not from supplements.

2. Second, that "the synergistic effect is powerful" - in other words, antioxidant activity isn't the function of a single vitamin or nutrient alone,

... "it is the combination of countless compounds in a fruit working together."

"The Bait and Switch" ... How Big Pharma Repackages Vitamins as Expensive Drugs !!!

The latest prescription medicine called Niaspan, which targeted to men and women with coronary artery disease and high cholesterol:

“...works to raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels in people with abnormal cholesterol levels ... also works to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides.”
Plus, Niaspan can "reduce the risk of another heart attack in people who have high cholesterol and a history of heart attacks."

Now, here's the thing about Niaspan... it isn't really a drug! ... it's nothing more than time-released niacin (vitamin B3)!

You can get a month's supply (without a doctor's order) from most vitamin shops for under $7. Without a doubt, you're much better off going that route... because Abbott Labs will charge you a heck of a lot more ... this profitable hoax, earning hundreds of millions of dollars for the drug giant Abbott Labs!

"The Bait and Switch" ... How Big Pharma Repackages Fish Oil as Expensive Drugs !!!

You've probably heard of a prescription drug called Lovaza, right? I chuckled when I first heard about it, because it's nothing more than refined fish oil.
But it sounds snazzy and you need a doctor's prescription for it ... so it must work better than regular fish oil, right?

Wrong. It doesn't. It contains the same active ingredients you find in fish oil: EPA and DHA.
But Big Pharma managed to fool many, many Americans with this hoax.

In fact, this kind of con is hugely profitable for Big Pharma ... earning billions of dollars for the drug giant Abbott Labs.
For this reason alone, we will see more and more vitamins magically "repackaged" and sold as drugs.

Consumer Information

Taste - Goji Berry

The taste of the goji berry is not what people expect ... it has a nutty flavor. Some have described it as a cross between a cranberry, a strawberry, and a raspberry.  It is also rather tart.

Food Uses - Goji Berry

Goji berries can be eaten right out of the bag, add to cereals, smoothies, trail mixes and salads, or chop them up and add them to oatmeal, power bars and granola.

Goji berries are commonly used in tea, wine, fruit juices, crunch bars, cereals and plain dried fruit. Other products containing goji berries have become increasing popular in recent years. Part of this is because some celebrities are reportedly consuming (and raving about) them, and part is due to their legendary health-promoting properties. In the past, goji berries could only only found in specialized health food stores in the U.S. and Western Europe, but now the goji berries are appearing in a few mainsteam supermarkets also.

Some ideas for using freshly washed goji berries are to mix them in healthful yogurt or pudding, in oatmeal or other hot cereal, or even in soups or stews.

In Japan, goji berries are often seen on top of a dessert, others routinely add goji berries to the rice cooker.

Goji berry leaves and the root bark are both used in Chinese medicine.  Typically a tea is made with these two parts of the plant.  This has been proven to work in clearing up bacteria and fungus in the human system.  The Chinese also use this fruit as an everyday part of mealtimes.  Goji berries have a nut like taste. Most often they can be found dried; very rarely will the fresh fruits be sold.

Fruit Grower - Information

TMF Florida Fruits

Southern Florida has long been the site of tropical and subtropical fruit production and research. Specialty tropical fruits have been part of the Florida tropical fruits research program at the TREC - Tropical Research and Educational Center - (www.trec.ifas.ufl.edu) since its establishment in 1930.

The future of tropical fruits in South Florida seems very bright, especially considering the involvement and investment of local growers in the important research efforts. The 1980's saw a major increase in the areas planted to specialty tropical fruits in southern Florida.

A wealth of International scientific and medical research (www.nutrionomics.com) supports the medical and nutritional health benefits of tropical and subtropical fruits, high in bio-natural vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other vital nutrients. Exemplary marketing campaigns supported by proven scientific research have accompanied increases in fruit production and should serve as a model for other industries and societies.

For the consumers... the immediate goal of TMF Florida is to promote the campaign for healthy living and support the finally emerging "Green Wave" in Nutrition, to help the end consumer to better understand the cardinal importance of their daily nutritional decisions, and to experience the significance of optimal bio-natural nutrition upon their health and lifestyle.

For the Florida fruit grower
... TMF Florida represents the show window for their wonderful fruits and the marketing strategy so deeply ignored in the past - based on all the internet possibilities available today and certainly increasing exponentially in the future.
